altered states of consciousness by the practice of contemplative prayer also called “soaking” prayer. origins of this are from the writings of the late Trappist monk Thomas Merton who died in 1968 in Bangkok, Thailand as he was preparing to join up with some Buddhist monks. Merton (not to be confused with Merlin) was a follower of Zen that he felt was adaptable to Christianity. A recent obsession with Merton in Protestant circles is seen by the Roman Catholic hierarchy as a feather in their cap for claiming supremacy over non-Catholic Christians. in other words it's a part of roman catolic mysticism.
