Formerly known by the dainty name of Emma, the New Jersey screamo band Guns Like Girls are anything but delicate on their EP “The Octopus In The Igloo.” There are no literary or Spice Girls references to be found as the sextet go for an upbeat sound that is weighed down with razor sharp riffs and thick vocals. Heavy drumming from band member Jono Melamed keeps the band in control, their songs practically running away as their momentum builds. Guitars and drums follow each other in quick succession on “Prices Switch” and lay the groundwork for the deep tones and melodically tinged riffs that will follow. Upbeat sounding musically, tracks like “Hand Control” show the multiple sides of the band as vocalist Jose Rodriguez turns the screamed vocals on and off from one second to the next over quick instrumentation while softer parts on “He Is Not A Bird” push the band’s sound to the breaking point. Guns Like Girls throw listeners for a loop as they take time out with “Sugarberry” for a memorable percussion led instrumental. For Guns Like Girls, the goal for “The Octopus In The Igloo” is all about being DIY and remaining original. It is a target that the band comfortably meets with the EP’s eight tracks. With six members, Guns Like Girls’ sound is active, rarely resting, and always trying to engage, whether it is with rapid rhythms or their layered sound.
