`When I was five years old I entered this colouring competition, not really knowing what it was all about, but it involved birds and felt tip pens. What more could you want? Drawing was a big part of my childhood, having felt tips scattered everywhere. Plus I had a speech impediment, where I'd unwittingly miss the first and last consonant off every word until I hit a vowel. As you can imagine, no one could understand me except my twin sister. Not much fun, but I quite liked it in this bubble, and I found drawing was a good way to communicate. A few years ago I found a picture from the competition. Weirdly it must have been burnt into my subconscious, because 20 years on I was still drawing exactly the same thing: a bird, a girl, and a big round sun..`
