… Music is more than just a Sound … with this slogan, Maria Mashkova dedicates herself to all her projects concerning electronic music. (Equipment for sets at the moment: 2 Pioneer CD Player and Mixer) You can describe her style as a mixture of tribal and progressive house melting with advanced trance sounds to transport her specific kind of energy to the crowd on the floor. She loves it when the audience understands and is open to being taken on a journey through her set! Born in eastern Berlin, Maria is the youngest in a multicultural family. Maria grew up with classical music, as the daughter of an enthusiastic hobby pianist and as the sister of a choir guitarist. Her first contact with vinyl occurred at the age of six while scanning the record-collection of her parents ‑ Abba to Tchaikovsky. The record-player of the household was later confiscated, and musical entertainment within the family home was limited. After the falling of the Berlin Wall, Maria soon got access to electronic music, which she frequently likes to refer to as a kind of ‘digitized classical music‘. She feels there are infinite possibilities to interpret the music for oneself and therefore it is very suitable for diving into. It all began in Canada. Because of her triathlon training, Maria moved to the North American Continent for one year back in 1997. Electronic music wasn’t very common there, so she began to put together several DJ-sets for herself. Her basic equipment for this task was an old Technics record player, only 3% pitchable, a second, only half-functioning player, and a double tape deck. Thus the desired sets resulted in a clumsy sequence of tracks, but nevertheless were sufficient as a steady companion on Maria’s running and biking trips. Back in Berlin, Maria immersed herself in working with her newly acquired Gemini-clones and a mixer bought dirt-cheap at a fair, and refined her technique and track selection… her passion was lit up. Finally her efforts led to a feature on Paul van Dyk’s radio program “Soundfiles”, now known as “Soundgarden” on Radio Fritz. Her First club experience was during gigs in underground clubs. From 1998 to 2000, Maria went on the air with her own radio and TV-Program called “Fragile”, regularly broadcasted on OKB (Offener Kanal Berlin). It was her goal to present an overview of the electronic music scene here in Berlin. She had interviews with Corvin Dalek, Namito, Jay Ray, Mijk van Dijk and many more. Naturally, party-reviews and publication of events to come were also part of the program. Between 1998 and 2000, Maria had gigs at Love Parade. In 2001 she was selected as the winner of the “Mothership Contest”, on the love-truck sponsored by Alcatech. After winning a big prize package, she rocked the crowd for two hours and was booked for further events. After a break from 2002, for different private reasons, Maria relaunched in 2006. Many things developed since than. 2008 was a really good year - there were lots of interesting developings and bookings and of course not to forget the ‘Mashkova & Friends’ event series which were really good and fun! now 2009 has several new and exciting projects coming up, always according to her philosophy: “…Music is more than just a sound!“
