Trance evolved from German Techno, using the rolling bass and sizzling keyboards of techno to give the music a hypnotic flowing effect, yet retaining all the driving, pulsating energy of it's true techno roots. Attributes: synth/sample-driving, pounding basslines, complex cyber-sounding keyboards, usually instrumental. 128 to 150 BPM. Examples: Aphex Twin, HardTrance Acsperience, Cosmo, Raver's Nature, Marusha and anything on the Harthouse, D-Jax, Rough Trade, or EX labels. Trance is arguably the most popular form of electronic dance music (EDM). Trance first reared it's head into the music scene in the late 1980s, and has been increasing in popularity ever since. Trance was originally derived from a mixture of electronic new wave/industrial music, electronic techno disco of Detroit, and the psychedelic music of the seventies. "By the mid-1990s, trance had emerged commercially as one of the dominant genres of EDM. Immensely popular, trance found itself filling a niche as edgier than house, more soothing than drum-n-bass, and more accessible than techno."
