Valenta, Assistant Dean of MBA Programs "We train because what we know is that in times of crisis, we will automatically revert to that training." For years, public safety training experts have recognized the fact that when human beings are put under stress, they will act in remarkably predictable manners. The corporate sector can learn from the experiences of these public safety professionals. By understanding the physiological impact that a crisis has on our decision making process, as well as understanding the lessons learned by those that face crisis on a regular basis, an organization can create an environment wherein there is a positive response to a crisis that will be resolved in a positive manner. An organization must understand the impact that leadership, dissension, focus and teamwork have on the successful resolution of a given crisis. Furthermore, a crisis rarely remains a private event. Whether the situation comes to the attention of the entire organization or to the external world, an effective communication strategy must be in place to allow the members of the crisis management team to focus on the task at hand.
