You are invited to a global event – Earth Hour ’09, March 28th, 8:30-9:30PM local time. Everyone is encouraged to use no electricity (or as little as possible) during that hour. Turn off your lights, computer, TV, dishwasher, etc. This (a) shows policy makers that people do care about their air, (b) promotes awareness of individual electricity use, (c) reduces the world's carbon footprint for an hour. On Earth Hour '08, the world was astounded at how many people participated, in so many countries. Millions of people in cities including Atlanta, Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tel Aviv and Manila united and switched off for one hour - Earth Hour - sending a national and global message that it's possible to take action on oil dependence and global warming. The year before, on 31 March 2007, Earth Hour was born when 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney (Australia) businesses turned off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney’s energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour. Toronto is among a dozen other cities worldwide that will participate in Earth Hour by turning off lights and appliances for an hour on March 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., to symbolize the people's commitment to tackling global warming. Sponsors of the Toronto event include WWF-Canada, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Star. Imagine the CN Tower, the Rogers Centre and the glow of Yonge St. all blackened temporarily, allowing city dwellers a rare glimpse of the stars. "Every person, every business and every government has a shared duty to fight climate change," said Toronto Mayor David Miller, urging Torontonians to take part. "Where national governments fail to lead, cities can and must lead." One hour of darkness won't stop the globe from warming, but the event is designed to get people to stop and think about what is taken for granted – electricity – especially when it's generated by carbon-belching coal plants, one of the world's leading causes of climate change. Let's make it even bigger in 2009!
