Email: pgolovatina@mail.ru Undergraduate lecture-seminar: Fourth year Time: M 14:00-15:20, TR 14:00-15:20 Course Description: this course is elaborated to introduce students into the main discourses on nationalism theory and processes of the national-building with a focus on ECE countries. It gives students introduction to the main theories of nationalism, problems of terminology and periodization of nation-building, main discourses on the collision of imperial interests and national minority identities, on their inter-influence, and on conditions of the national state-building and nation-building. Provided students are prepared for every session they are expected to learn • about the main discourses, terms and debates between different schools and theories of nationalism, • how to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in their own research and/or analysis of historical and political events, • how to lead the academic discussion and analyze scholarly works. !!! Participation in the seminar is required and the students are expected to do their readings and written assignments, as well as participate in the discussion. A student who missed the discussion class or did not take part in the discussion has to hand in a 1 page analytical paper* on every week reading piece by the beginning of the following class. Requirements: Working language of the seminar is English. The language of the readings is English and Russian. Knowledge of English is required. Attendance and doing week readings is required. Grade: Total grade for this class consists of the several components, as follows: 1. Attendance and participation in the class discussion** is an essential part of the seminar and is required. It makes 80 per cent of the total grade 2. Research part includes: a PP presentation of a selected work representing one of the nationalism theories (it is a group project and requires work in groups of 4-5 people) 20 per cent of the total grade 3. Final exam: no. In case a student missed at least 10 per cent of the discussions they are to sit the final test on the last week of classes within the module: final test will be a written in class exam (two short essays) The final grade is based on the points earned by students: • one point for every class attended • maximum five points for every discussion (maximum five points for the analytical paper submitted by deadline) • maximum five points for the book presentation • maximum 10 points for a test *Instructions on writing the analytical papers: Font: 12 Times New Roman; Spacing: 1.5 lines. No plagiarism!!! Footnotes and references are an essential part of every research paper and are required!!! Plagiarism is copying (i.e. reproducing a line of five words and more) from any source without proper acknowledgment or reference. Penalties for plagiarism are severe, so if you have any doubt whether you have (even unintentionally) plagiarized, consult the instructor prior to submitting your assignment.
