Nationalism and Culture in Post-socialism

Course Description: the seminar is devoted to the issues of national identity transformation in the countries of the former socialist bloc since 1989/1991. The module will focus on transformation of such notions as Eurasia, Europeaness, and nation all over the region. We are going to focus mainly on the cultural aspects and outcomes of the national identities in the region, trying to scrutinize and explain the reasons of the changes, and define the main tendencies of the transformation. We are going to define such notions as globalization, regionalism, and glocalism, and look how those phenomena correspond to the everydayness in the societies of the region.
Requirements: Working language of the seminar is English. The language of the readings is English and Russian. Knowledge of English is required. Attendance and doing week readings are required.
Grade: Total grade for this class consists of the several components, as follows:
1. Attendance and participation in the class discussion makes an important part of the seminar. – 40%
2. Research part includes: the students have to submit one short research paper representing the results of a group or individual research on assigned topics (based on a poll, or an analysis of newspaper/journal articles, TV programs, movies, etc.) and report/ present the main findings in the class – 60%
Instructions on reading and discussion:
Students are expected to read all the materials required and select one of the articles recommended so that in total all suggested articles are read.
Instructions on writing the term papers:
Font: 12 Times New Roman; Spacing: 1.5 lines.
No plagiarism!!! Footnotes and references are an essential part of every research paper and are required!!! Plagiarism is copying (i.e. reproducing a line of five words and more) from any source without proper acknowledgment or reference. Penalties for plagiarism are severe, so if you have any doubt whether you have (even unintentionally) plagiarized, consult the instructor prior to submitting your assignment.
