3rd Annual – Russian and International Student Education Network (R.I.S.E.N.) Event Date: Saturday, November 22nd, 2008. Location: Mayakovskaya Library, Fontanka 46 (Through the courtyard to the left, and then upstairs) Metro Station: Gostiniy Dvor or Mayakovskaya Time: 17:00-19:00 Dear Friends, Greetings, along with the first snow in St. Petersburg of this wintertime! Please receive this message as a reminder that the next R.I.S.E.N. event will be held this coming Saturday, November 22nd at the Mayakovskaya Library. We hope to continue our small group discussions, games, trivia questions and English music while providing a place where students and recent graduates from different countries, backgrounds and faculties can meet for conversation and socializing. The objective of R.I.S.E.N. has been to foster an environment where students from different universities and institutes can meet, learn about each others’ studies and experiences and share stories in either English or Russian. With this goal in mind, our focus has been on conversation, challenging topics and fellowship, with occasional guest speakers from the ex-pat and Russian local communities giving presentations. We also offer a Quest adventure for those who would like to pursue a single topic in-depth. The theme from the last meeting was “What difference does a decision make?” The theme for this coming Saturday will be “Wealth: Who needs it?” A few questions as food for thought: Is wealth mainly a question of money, or are there other meanings of this word too? What is wrong with a generation of wealth-seekers or what is good about it? How much does technology define what wealth is or is not? What are examples of ‘things that money can’t buy’? Does the wealth of a nation primarily define its position on the world stage? These questions and others will fit into the general theme of our meeting. The goal of R.I.S.E.N. is to develop a network of students meeting regularly and speaking about social, economic, academic and general life issues. If it is entertaining, stimulating and a friendly place to meet other university students in St. Petersburg, then R.I.S.E.N. will be a worthwhile organization for you to join.
