Darkcore (Doomcore) is a type of electronic music, and a less known subgenre of hardcore techno. The first doomcore tracks were released in early 1990s, and they continued the slower, and darker style of the first hardcore tracks. Marc Acardipane's Planet Core Productions was one of the first record labels, which released this kind of music.
The speed of doomcore tracks (with few expections) ranges between 130 and 160 BPM, which makes it the slowest hardcore techno genre. The trademark TR-909 kickdrum used differently then in other hardcore genres: It usually employs less distortion, and less decay, however a reverb effect is added on it sometimes. Offbeat cymbals are usual. The atmosphere of the tracks is often similar to industrial music, doom metal and dark ambient[citation needed]. Producers reach this impression by using spooky ambient pads, different scary or screaming samples, and industrial noises. While there are melodic tracks, melodies are not requirements of doomcore tracks. When used, repetition of the main melody is a common practice, often to the point of repetition.
Raggacore is a genre of music resembling a heavier version of ragga jungle The earliest examples of raggacore can be found in productions of Remarc, who is sometimes called 'a king of amen' for his highly messed "hardcore" amen jungle rhythms as early as from 1994.
Ragga jungle is the type of music that emerged circa 1989-1990 and is initially heavily based on production of Michael West (Rebel MC, Congo Natty Label). Early pioneers of the genre also include Leenie De Ice and Ragga Twins.
This style is credited with engaging the black community within the jungle scene, and contributed to the 'bad boy' or 'rude boy' subculture within the UK. Ragga jungle's popularity waned significantly since 1995 in the UK, in part because the more popular DJs have avoided giving the sound airtime. Ragga jungle is now a niche sound, with a small number of labels releasing music that can be categorised in this manner.
Recently, (2001-present) Canadian and American producers have been gaining popularity with their updated version of the sub-genre largely through online networks, sparking a small, yet international renaissance. Prominent produers of this new-school sound are continuing to build bridges; often revoicing classic reggae singers to produce new works for exclusive use ( as "dubplates") and retail sale as 12" vinyl singles and downloadable mp3's.
