This presentation will discuss global prospects at the most uncertain time in many years, and seek to address key questions. Will the current slowdown end in recession, and what are the chances of recovery next year? How much drag will the financial crisis put on activity in the United States and Europe? How far will emerging economies be able to sustain their growth momentum, and how vulnerable are they to financial contagion? Where are commodity prices headed, and what are the risks of return to the 1970s style stagflation? Dr. Charles Collyns is Deputy Director of the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund. He received a Doctorate in Economics from Oxford University after obtaining first class honors as an undergraduate at Cambridge University. He was responsible for the Fund’s surveillance work on Japan, on the United States, and on Brazil. He moved to his present position in the Research Department in June 2006, where he leads the team responsible for preparing the “World Economic Outlook.” Dr. Collyns is author of a number of publications on international macro-economics. He co edited “Post Bubble Blues—How Japan Responded to Asset Price Collapse,” “Managing Financial Crises—Recent Experience and Lessons for Latin America,” and “Stabilization and Reform in Latin America—A Macroeconomic Perspective on the Experience since the early 1990s.”
