Finnish-Russian University Cooperation Program in Telecommunications (FRUCT) seminar http://www.fruct.org Overview The seminar will consist of presentations of student research teams, lectures given by leading researchers and industry experts and lectures about FRUCT program background and development. Students from outside FRUCT are warmly welcome to participate to present their research results as well, join the existing research teams or create new ones. Representatives from more than 10 universities from Russia and Finland are expected to participate, as well as Nokia Research Center and Symbian. Registration Registration deadline: October 20. Background and motivation The distinctive feature of modern IT and Telecommunications industries is a dramatic shortening of the period when technology remains commercially viable. On the one hand, this is due to the competition between key market players, which is pushing all manufacturers to accelerate innovations; on the other hand, this is due to technological progress speed up caused by the growing expansion of intellectual resource invested into R&D and design activities. This trend is an important call and challenge for the leading educational and research institutions around the globe. At the moment the USA is a clear world leader in adopting university education to the new industrial trends, which makes it crucial for EU countries and Russia to combine forces in order to follow up the competition and create new valuable for industry research results. In our view, the first logical step on this way is to build a bridge between Russian and Finnish academic worlds, increase visibility of involved research teams in both counties and help in establishing direct personal contacts between academic and industrial experts.
