Russian and International Student Education Network (R.I.S.E.N.) This message is a reminder about the R.I.S.E.N. event this coming Saturday, May 17th. The last meeting was once again a success, with over 60 participants from several countries. This Saturday’s theme will invite university students and recent graduates for more conversation, trivia games, music, challenging topics and fellowship. The theme for our last event was “What is it about America?” Some film footage from the event is posted on the VKontakte site (http://vkontakte.ru/club1254784) for the Visions of America contest (http://vkontakte.ru/video62896382). There were many provocative conversations and many people wanted to express their opinions! This Saturday’s theme will be “Cross-Cultural Communication and Self-Expression.” A few questions as food for thought: Do you think it is important to read foreign literature to get to know other cultures? Is it better to learn a foreign language and then read books in that language or is translated literature a decent equivalent of the original? What kinds of things can be learned about how a foreign culture is different from yours? In what ways do you think travelling helps get to know representatives of other cultures? What differences are there between cultures as far as private space and public space is concerned? Please send any images or Russian quotations that you think are relevant to this theme! If you could send them to this address by Friday at noon they will help to supplement the presentation. At the event we will have one or two small groups for Russian speakers who either don’t feel comfortable speaking in English or who want to practise their Russian. So please invite your friends who may be interested to come along and discuss the theme, but who prefer to speak Russian.
