Russian and International Student Education Network (R.I.S.E.N.) This message is a reminder about the R.I.S.E.N. event this Saturday, April 19th. The last meeting was once again a success, with over 65 participants from 12 countries. This Saturday we look forward to hosting Russian and International students for more conversation, trivia games, music, challenging topics and fellowship. Last week’s theme of “Travel as a Method of Education” generated many conversations on a wide range of topics. Our theme for this Saturday, “What is it about America?” will likely do the same. Some questions that may serve as food for thought leading up to the event: What is unique about American culture and society that are not found anywhere else in the world? How have the arts, music and sports coming out of America changed the world? Are capitalism, consumerism and even democracy particularly American exports or are they a kind of world phenomenon? How does the American media system influence other nations or behavioural patterns? How does ‘the American dream’ differ or how is it similar to what you dream about for your future? Would you like someday to live in America or would you prefer just to visit? This Saturday we will also have a guest speaker that will enhance the discussion atmosphere. Please send any images or Russian quotations that you think are relevant to this theme! If you could send them to this address by Friday at noon they will help to supplement the presentation. At the event we will have one or two small groups for Russian speakers who either don’t feel comfortable speaking in English or who want to practise their Russian. So please invite your friends who may be interested to come along and discuss the theme, but who prefer to speak Russian.
