Dear Friends,
Good wishes to you as the warm weather brings fresh spring air! This message is a reminder about the R.I.S.E.N. event this Saturday, April 5th. The last meeting was once again a success, with over 75 students from 12 countries. This Saturday we look forward to hosting Russian and International students for more conversation, trivia games, music, challenging topics and fellowship.
Last week’s theme of “Men and Women are both from Earth” generated many provocative conversations on a wide range of topics. Our guest speaker presented a controversial theme, telling of his participation in a symbolic vote in England which gave women certain rights that they had been previously denied. This week’s theme, though not as controversial, may still be close to the heart of many young people today.
The theme for this Saturday is “Travel as a Method of Education.” A few preliminary questions: What does travelling contribute to our understanding of the world, of our-selves and of global and local conditions? How important is it both to step outside of our regional mindset to see how others live and to return to discover our own lives more intimately and honestly? Does the experience of travel in some way substitute for textual and/or taught learning? If we don’t travel can we still learn important truths about other peoples and cultures? What difference does it make if we travel alone or with others? These questions will supplement the dialogue, with guest speakers from England and Australia to add to the mix.
At the event we will have one or two small groups for Russian speakers who either don’t feel comfortable speaking in English or who want to practise their Russian. So please invite your friends who may be interested to come along and discuss the theme, but who prefer to speak Russian.
After Saturday’s R.I.S.E.N. event food and drinks will be available in a social atmosphere. See the attached document for more information about R.I.S.E.N. Please invite your friends to join us.
Hope to see you on Saturday!

“A person of destiny knows that beyond this hill lies another and another. The journey is never complete.” – F. W. de Klerk
“For a voyage to the destination, whatever it may be,
is also a voyage inside oneself,
even as a cyclone carries along with it the center
in which it must ultimately come to rest.
At these moments I think not only of the distances I have
traveled within myself – without friend or ship –
but of the long way I have yet to go before I come home
within myself and within the journey.” – Laurens van der Post
“Traveller, there are no paths,
Paths are made by walking.” – Antonio Machado
