Dear Friends, Greetings at this time of mid-March in St. Petersburg! Please be reminded that the next R.I.S.E.N. event will be held this Saturday, March 22nd. The previous gathering on March 1st at Mayakovskaya Library was attended by over 60 students from a variety of higher education institutions in the city and from more than 10 different countries. The goal of R.I.S.E.N. is to create an environment where students and recent graduates can meet and discuss themes that are close to young people’s lives in St. Petersburg, with small group discussion, trivia questions, games, music, challenging topics and fellowship. Last week’s theme, “Leadership, Follower-ship and Stewardship,” included a guest speaker telling about the history of the concept of ‘service’ in the Soviet UNIОN and recent times in Russia and about the possibility of participating in community building and service today. For many people, the topic of stewardship was something quite new, but many discussions opened as a result. This Saturday’s theme is already generating some interest and potential controversy. In contrast to the best-selling book by John Gray, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” our theme for R.I.S.E.N. is “Men and Women are both from Earth.” The idea is to speak a little a bit about relationships, to ask about the differences and similarities of men and women, and to look at the history of gender relations, including the way men and women act and treat each other in different geographic regions. As usual, we will include our eight general themes: Art, Music, Sports, Culture, Environment, Careers, Science and Spirit. If you have any quotations, images or song lyrics you think are relevant on this topic, please send them to risenspb@gmail.com. As with the previous meeting, we will have one or two small groups for Russian speakers who want to participate, but not in English. Please feel welcome to invite your friends to join us!
