This group is intended to celebrate the works of the science fiction author Douglas Noel Adams, and to present information about his life, to make the author known for a wider audience and for the members to contribute with new information and experiences. Everyone is welcome!
TO WHOM DO THE WORKS APPEAL?
Primary, Douglas Adams works appeal to people who are enthusiastic about science, escpecially computers and astronomy. The books are written in the light of science, and its wonderful applications, but also the way science is used in the hunt for more knowledge.
Douglas Adams portrays human beings as a "specie", which together with other species and in the context of the large universe does not have control of its own destiny, but with this destiny he describes warmly and in a funny way how one ends up where one needs to be.
The works of douglas adams are wonderful and brilliant! The books will appeal to everyone, having a vivid imagination and being open to everything.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Douglas Noël Adams (1952-2001) [1] was a british comic writer, born in Cambridge, England, who wrote many science fiction- and satirical books. Although he is best known for the 12-part radio series "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (1978), and a movie, he also produced many other works, for instance the Dirk Gently novels "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" (1987) and "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul" (1988). Other works include "The Meaning of Liff" (with John Lloyd; 1983), "The Utterly Utterly Merry Comic Relief Christmas Book" (coeditor, with Peter Fincham; 1986), and "Last Chance to See…" (with Mark Carwardine; 1990).
Douglas Adams also participated in the writing of the television series "Doctor Who", on BBC.
This group, "Magrathea", got its name from the fictious planet in the Hitchhiker's book. However, as a newly started group, the name of it may be changed. The administrator is open for suggestions.
HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY - THE RADIO SERIES
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy (HGTG) was first broadcasted as a radio series on the british radio channel Radio 4 in 1978. The BBC team behind the production of this series later got prices and awards for best sound engineering, because this science fiction story required a substancial amount of "special effect", something that was more demanding before the digital era. However, the final series was a success, and I recommend all Hitchiker fans to listen to these original radio episodes (contact the group administrator if anyone is interested in get the radio series).
HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY - THE BOOKS
The books were written simultaneously with-, and are based upon, the radio series. The hitchhiker-series came in 5 books: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (1978), "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" (1980), "Life, the Universe and Everything" (1982), "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish" (1985), and "Mostly Harmless" (1992)
Being new to Douglas Adams' works, it is recommended to start to read the books, since these books convey the original story in best way, which is the most funny and best story written on this planet :)
It is also recommended to read the books in the original language, english, as some of Douglas Adams' artistic explanations and phrases are difficult to translate into other languages.
The Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy also became a tv-series and a movie. Read further on about it on the wall, стена.
