A new law in Korea is in effect as of February 18, 2013 where users can no longer sign up with a social security number. There are other methods to verify yourself which are: i-PIN and mobile phone verification. A new law will come in effect next week in Korea which means companies are getting rid of the method of using a social security number. Instead users will have to register through other methods such as: i-PIN, phone, birth certificate, passport/id or credit card. If you have a Korean nationality you can request an i-PIN(http://i-pin.kisa.or.kr/kor/cheat/cheat02.jsp). To request an i-PIN you need to confirm your full identity. i-PIN is the alternative to the social security number. It is more secure and protected and can be used in various services. If an owner of an i-PIN found out that his or her i-PIN has been used, the numbers can be changed to minimize identity theft. Please remember that this guide does not use the i-PIN method and it will probably not be updated since it is almost impossible for foreigners to obtain an I-PIN. Other methods such as phone, birth certificate, credit card speak for themselves.
