Summary ═════════ ■ Trekking / camping / rafting / climbing trip ■ Mountainous and forested region of lakes and rivers ■ In central siberia on border with Mongolia ■ 18 days in total ■ Start date either in June or July ■ Anyone can do it! But should be in reasonably good health ■ Group of nine at present. Space for up to 3 more people ■ Trip is at absolute minimum cost price. No profit is made by organiser ■ Final organisation and group numbers must be worked out by April 24th Details ══════════ Yes, we're organising an amazing expedition to real off-the-beaten-track place that is totally unspoilt by tourism. It is a valley located in a secluded part of the siberian Taiga called "the Altai mountains" and there we will trek through remote valleys to a snow-capped mountain called Mt. Belukha (5609m). This snow-capped mountain, with quite distinctive form, rises majestically above the rest of the Altai, looking down into China to the south, Mongolia to the south-east, Kazakhstan to the west and Siberia to the North. The region is awe-inspiringly beautiful with forests of many varieties of trees including scotts-pine and wild cedar and millions of varieties of remarkable plants. The high mountain passes are interspersed with azure lakes of pure mineral-laden waters and the high valleys begin with glaciers and then change from mountain streams to white-crested torrential rivers of pure turquoise! This land is wild, free from civilisation and one of the last homes of the Siberian tiger! From the siberian city of Novosibirsk we will take a train (and bus) south to the town Gorna-Altaisk and then a mini-bus as far into the Altai as the road goes. From then on we trek by foot and camp in tents while exploring all the valleys, lakes, caves and other hidden places. We will also ascend to a ridge at 12,500 ft below the summit of Mt. Belukha and admire the awesome views. On the way back from the mountain we will camp at the stunning lake Kercherlinskoy at 6500 ft and explore, swim, do some caving and rock climbing (with qualified mountaineers). Finally a trek through Kara-Turek pass and down into a neighbouring valley - passing along the way many signs of the culture of the ancient civilisations that once settled here including the Scythians, Gunnes and Turks. There are various barrows, old stone sculptures of long-dead warriors and rock drawings, petroglyphs and an ancient religious edifice or two (an old wooden chapel perched on a ridge in the middle of nowhere!) The last three days of this adventure will involve rafting back down the river through forested valleys back to base camp at Tungur settlement (on modern inflatable rafts). In Gorno Altaisk, Barnaul and Novosibirsk there will also be a few days to relax, do some sightseeing and try the local Siberian cuisine. Trek of a lifetime! Who is up for the challenge, fun, comaradie, camping round the fire and silent majesty of these mountain vistas?
